The Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), under the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has officially handed over a state-of-the-art Information and Communication Technology (ICT) project to the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH) in Igbesa, Ogun State.

The newly inaugurated Emerging Technologies Centre (ETC) is designed to enhance the learning experience of students while fostering digital innovation, research, and development (R&D) to drive Nigeria’s economic growth.

The ETC, equipped with 100 desktop computers, emerging technology applications, bandwidth, and connectivity tools, aims to provide students and faculty members with access to cutting-edge resources.

The project is part of the USPF’s efforts to bridge the digital divide and promote digital inclusion across Nigeria.

During the handover ceremony on Thursday, USPF Secretary Yomi Arowosafe emphasized that the Centre represents more than just infrastructure—it symbolizes a vision and commitment to the future of Ogun State and Nigeria.

He highlighted the strategic direction of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, led by Dr. Bosun Tijani, and the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, in driving ICT access for underserved communities.

Arowosafe noted that the USPF has implemented numerous access and connectivity projects across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones, positively impacting ICT utilization and deepening connectivity nationwide.

He expressed pride in partnering with OGITECH, a leading technology institution with a student population of 9,300, to bring the ETC to life.

The Centre is expected to serve as a hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and skill development in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and cybersecurity.

A landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during the ceremony to ensure the effective utilization and sustainability of the ETC. Arowosafe explained that the MoU is part of the USPF’s sustainability strategy, encouraging beneficiary organizations to take ownership of projects and ensure their long-term impact.

OGITECH’s Rector, Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, commended the NCC and USPF for selecting the Institute as the project site.

He pledged to ensure the Centre’s effective use and sustainability, benefiting both the institution and the wider community.

“We will work diligently to ensure this project serves its purpose and contributes to the development of our community,” he said.

The USPF, established by the Federal Government of Nigeria, aims to provide universal access to affordable telecommunications services, particularly in rural and underserved areas, to promote social equity and inclusion.

The ETC at OGITECH marks a significant milestone in this mission, offering a platform for innovation, research, and economic growth.
