NCC unveils Device Management System to protect phone users, guard against crimes

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced the Device Management System (NCC-DMS) to improve security and protect phone users and their devices.
The new initiative, called the ‘Type Approval Business Rule 2024’, is
a robust solution which will enhance security and protecting consumers in Nigeria’s mobile device market.
Consequently, the NCC mandates all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in the country connect to the NCC-DMS.
The NCC insisted that its primary objectives of the system are to improve security, enforce regulatory compliance, and increase control over mobile devices across Nigeria.
The NCC-DMS, acting as a Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), will serve as a unified database, enabling the tracking and monitoring of mobile devices on all networks.
Thus, by registering and monitoring devices, the NCC aims to curb the use of unapproved devices and combat issues like phone theft and fraudulent activities involving mobile gadgets.
This new system promises stricter control, while ensuring only authorized devices are used across Nigeria’s communication networks.
This will no doubt promote safer and more regulated mobile usage, according to the NCC.
Indeed, the move by the NCC will significantly reduce mobile-related crimes and enhance consumer protection, making Nigeria’s telecommunications more secure and safer.
