In a statement on Sunday, December 28, 2024, the NCC urged Nigerians to disregard the rumors and assured consumers of its dedication to transparency and consumer protection.

No Approved Tariff Increase

Addressing public concerns, a senior NCC official clarified that no tariff adjustments have been approved. The official highlighted the Commission’s strict regulatory process, which prioritizes public consultations and stakeholder involvement under the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) of 2003.

“These rumors are false and capable of causing unnecessary panic,” the official stated. “The NCC is committed to protecting subscribers’ interests and ensuring that any changes to tariffs are communicated clearly, well in advance, and through transparent processes.”

The NCC emphasized its responsibility to provide fair, affordable, and quality telecom services to Nigerians, assuring the public that there is no cause for alarm.

Stakeholder Engagement in Tariff Reviews

The Commission reiterated that any future adjustments to telecom tariffs would follow a transparent process involving consultations with stakeholders, including telecom operators, consumer advocacy groups, and the general public.

“In line with our mandate, consumer rights and interests remain at the core of all regulatory activities,” the NCC noted.

Consumer Advocacy Group Supports NCC

The Association of Telephone, Cable TV, and Internet Subscribers (ATCIS) backed the NCC’s position, dismissing claims of increased charges for calls, SMS, and data. ATCIS National President, Mr. Sina Bilesanmi, confirmed the group had sought clarification from the NCC and received assurances that the rumors were unfounded.

“There is absolutely no cause for alarm,” Bilesanmi stated, commending the NCC’s openness and commitment to engaging stakeholders in any future tariff discussions.

Promoting Accurate Reporting

The NCC also called on journalists and industry stakeholders to verify information before publication, warning that unverified reports could lead to public misinformation and unnecessary anxiety.

“Consumers are encouraged to rely on our official communication channels, such as www.ncc.gov.ng, for accurate updates,” the Commission advised.

Building Trust in Nigeria’s Telecom Sector

Through this clarification, the NCC reaffirmed its commitment to fostering transparency and protecting consumer interests while ensuring the sustainable development of Nigeria’s telecom industry.

Subscribers are assured that no tariff hikes have been approved, and the NCC remains steadfast in maintaining trust and stability in the telecom sector.
