NCC Approves Disconnection of Exchange Telecommunications from MTN Over Debt
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed the disconnection of Exchange Telecommunications Limited (Exchange) from MTN Nigeria Communications Limited (MTN) due to unpaid interconnect charges.
In a statement issued on Friday, Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, disclosed that Exchange’s failure to settle its financial obligations led to the decision.
The commission explained that Exchange was notified of the disconnection application and given the opportunity to respond.
Following a review of the circumstances, the NCC concluded that Exchange lacked sufficient justification for failing to pay the charges.
“The Commission, having examined the application and circumstances surrounding the indebtedness, determined that Exchange does not have sufficient reason for non-payment of the interconnect charges,” the statement noted.
Citing Section 100 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, and the Guidelines on Procedure for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators, 2012, the NCC confirmed that the disconnection will take effect five days from the notice’s issuance.
After this period, MTN will cease routing voice and data traffic through Exchange and will adopt alternative interconnection channels with other service providers until further notice.
The NCC assured the public that these measures will not disrupt interconnection services.
