NCAA investigates United Nigeria Airlines over second flight diversion in a month
United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) has encountered another diversion incident, diverting a Lagos-Anambra-bound flight to Asaba, Delta State’s capital, barely a month after a previous Abuja-bound flight faced a similar diversion.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) confirmed this recent incident, announcing an ongoing investigation.
Michael Achimugu, the director of public affairs and consumer protection at NCAA, issued a statement addressing the situation, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to aviation safety and compliance with aviation regulations.
The statement acknowledged that while flight diversions are not uncommon in the aviation industry, the NCAA is closely monitoring this occurrence to ensure strict enforcement of safety protocols outlined in the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations.
Regarding the affected passengers, the agency reported that some were accommodated in a nearby hotel in Asaba, while others opted for alternative transportation to reach their intended destinations.
The statement read: “Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), is aware of the diversion of United Nigeria Airlines flight UN542 Lagos-Anambra to Asaba, which occurred on 30th December 2023.
“While flight diversions are not uncommon in the air transportation business, the NCAA is investigating this incident and wishes to assure the general public of aviation safety, compliance and strict enforcement of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations.
“We have been informed by United Nigeria airline staff that some passengers have been taken to the Hotel, while others chose alternative means of transportation to their destination.
“NCAA is monitoring this incident closely.”
United Nigeria Airlines, grappling with multiple flight diversions within a short span, now faces regulatory scrutiny as the NCAA investigates the circumstances surrounding these incidents to uphold aviation safety standards in Nigeria.
