A serious collision involving multiple heavy-duty trucks on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has resulted in at least eight confirmed dead.
The crash occurred on Thursday near the Kara Bridge on the outskirts of Lagos, causing chaos on the vital transport route.
The incident involved several trucks, with one plunging into the Kara River and two others colliding and bursting into flames.
The wreckage and spilled cargo, including cartons of biscuits, completely blocked the highway, triggering a massive traffic gridlock.
Emergency services, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), were quickly deployed to the scene. TVC footage showed emergency teams battling intense flames and thick smoke billowing from the wreckage.
In an official statement, LASTMA confirmed that eight casualties were recorded from the multi-vehicle incident.
They detailed that efforts are in “top gear” to recover and evacuate the involved vehicles, but severe traffic congestion has built up on the expressway and adjoining routes like Ogunnusi Road.
This tragedy is the second major truck accident in Lagos within a week, following an incident on Saturday where a truck with failed brakes plunged off the Oshodi Bridge.
In light of these recurring events, LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, has reiterated a warning to truck drivers to adhere to strict safety standards and ensure their vehicles are properly maintained.
