The turned NDC poster of Obi, Kwankwaso in Kano by residents
Mob sets ablaze Peter Obi, Kwankwaso’s posters in Kano as NDC chairman escapes lynching
Tension erupted in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday when a mob reportedly set fire to campaign posters belonging to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
A video circulating on social media shows a group of youths burning posters bearing the images of the two politicians amid chants and commotion.
The incident also involved the NDC chairman in Ungogo, Bilyaminu Bachirawa, who was allegedly dragged off a moving motorcycle during the unrest. According to reports, Bachirawa narrowly escaped being lynched as angry youths pursued the motorcycle while shouting and attempting to attack him.
The circumstances that triggered the confrontation were not immediately clear as of the time of filing this report.
The development comes barely 48 hours after the NDC formally unveiled Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The party had, on Saturday evening, announced Obi’s emergence as its flagbearer. Shortly after securing the ticket, the former Anambra State governor unveiled former Kano State governor and political heavyweight Kwankwaso as his running mate.
Obi and Kwankwaso recently defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC, citing internal disagreements and protracted legal disputes within their former party.
The latest incident in Kano highlights growing political tensions ahead of the 2027 general election, particularly in states expected to play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the presidential contest.
Efforts to obtain official reactions from the Kano State Police Command and the NDC leadership in the state were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
No casualties were immediately reported, while security agencies had yet to issue a statement on the incident.
