Malami’s office accuses EFCC of “coordinated intimidation” after raids, cites threat to safety

Former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of launching retaliatory raids against his offices and residences.

The action followed his public call for the EFCC chairman to recuse himself from matters related to a specific judicial inquiry report.

Staff members of the former minister have raised alarms over threats to their safety following the unannounced operations in Abuja and Kebbi State.

According to a statement from Malami’s office, the raids targeted documents connected to Chapter 9 of the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry Report.

In a press release signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, Malami’s office described the events as “deeply alarming.” It stated that the raids began “immediately after the release of our statement addressing Chapter 9,” framing them as acts of intimidation and retaliation.

The statement warned that any harm to Malami or his staff would be attributable to this “pattern of conduct.”

It also posed critical questions about the legality and timing of the operations, challenging the secrecy and apparent lack of due process.

Furthermore, Malami’s office called on civil society, professional bodies, and human rights groups to pressure the government to release the full Salami Commission report—particularly Chapter 9—to ensure transparency.

It reiterated Malami’s willingness to submit to a “neutral and lawful process before a court of competent jurisdiction,” asserting that intimidation and media trials cannot replace due process.

He has been part of many start-ups, such as The Republic (1987), The Comet (1999), The Anchor 2001 – 2002; Sun Newspapers (2003); Westerner newsmagazine (2005 – 2010) as Editor; National Life (2011) as Sunday Editor, and Newswatch Newspapers (2012- 2016) as Daily Editor.

Dele Fashomi is now the Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Newstide247.com newspaper online, which he started in July 2015. He is also into biography writing, with many books in his trail, some of which he wrote alone and one he co- authored with his mentor, Mr Dare Babarinsa, entitled:  Olabiyi Durojaiye – DARE TO BE DiFFERENT. He also guided and collaborated with Pa Olatunji Odusanya in writing his autobiography – AGAINST ALL ODDS. There are many other books in the works under his pen.
