Newly signed Belgian striker, Romelu Lukaku, is said to have declined wearing Napoli’s number 9 shirt, opting for the number 11 out of respect for Victor Osimhen.

Lukaku joined Napoli after Osimhen’s relationship with the club was strained over unsuccessful transfer attempts to Chelsea and Al Ahli.

Lukaku, who signed with Napoli on the transfer deadline day, was offered Osimhen’s number nine shirt but chose to turn it down.

He said, “In life, one must show respect.l If Osimhen remains a Napoli player, even if excluded from the squad, the number nine shirt still belongs to him.”

Osimhen’s transfer bid to Chelsea and Al Ahli football club of Saudi Arabia failed to sail through before the close of transfer windiw at the weekend.

The failure to meet the deadline was attributed to Napoli’s extraordinary demands.

However, as the situation stands today with Lukaku in the picture, it would be difficult for the Super Eagles striker to get relevant play time under Conte.

Conte was quoted by Fabrizio Romano, the transfer guru, “I’m happy with the work the club did on the market.

“If there had been the sale of Victor Osimhen, we would have completed the situation… but I’m happy”.
