Traffic congestion caused by heavy flooding

LASTMA launches 3367 toll-free hotline to revolutionise emergency response, public accountability in Lagos

Lagos, a city where every second translates to economic value and millions, traffic depends on the smooth flow of road transportation, a single communication platform has the power to reshape urban mobility.

That platform is the newly launched 3367 Toll-Free Short-Code Hotline by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

Far more than a telephone number, 3367 is a strategic technological intervention aimed at redefining emergency response, boosting public participation and entrenching accountability within one of Africa’s most challenging transportation ecosystems.

Lagos has long been a city in perpetual motion, with its roads serving as vital conduits for commerce, industry, governance and everyday human activity. Yet the megacity’s rapid expansion has equally intensified transportation challenges — from breakdowns and collisions to stranded tankers, obstructive articulated vehicles and other incidents that can trigger massive gridlock within minutes.

Recognising the urgent need for a faster, more accessible and citizen-focused communication channel, LASTMA has deployed the 3367 Toll-Free Short-Code Hotline as a direct link between road users and emergency traffic responders. The initiative represents a significant departure from traditional reporting methods, offering residents a simplified, cost-free way to report traffic-related emergencies for prompt intervention.

Available on MTN, Glo and Etisalat (T2) networks, the platform eliminates financial barriers that might otherwise discourage people from reporting incidents that could disrupt traffic flow or endanger lives.

But the significance of 3367 goes well beyond emergency reporting. Its most transformative feature may well be its capacity to deepen transparency and institutional accountability. Through the platform, the public can not only report traffic incidents but also provide feedback on the conduct, professionalism and operational performance of LASTMA personnel across the state.

In an age when public institutions are increasingly judged by their responsiveness and openness to scrutiny, the hotline offers a vital mechanism for building trust between government agencies and citizens. It empowers residents to become active participants in the quest for service excellence and efficient traffic administration.

The platform’s multilingual capability further enhances its inclusivity. Recognising Lagos’ linguistic diversity, callers can interact with operators in English, Yoruba and Pidgin English — a deliberate feature ensuring that language never becomes a barrier during emergencies when clarity, speed and accuracy matter most.

Transportation analysts view the introduction of 3367 as part of a broader evolution in public service delivery. Modern cities are increasingly turning to technology-driven solutions for urban challenges, and transportation management remains one of the most critical areas requiring innovation. By deploying a dedicated toll-free short-code, LASTMA has aligned itself with global best practices centred on real-time information gathering, rapid incident response and enhanced citizen engagement.

The platform effectively turns millions of residents into partners in traffic management, establishing a collaborative framework where information can flow swiftly from incident scenes to operational units.

LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, rightly described the initiative as a landmark advancement in the Agency’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and ensuring seamless vehicular movement across Lagos State. His words capture the broader vision behind the project — one rooted in responsiveness, innovation and public service efficiency.

In a city of Lagos’ scale, timely information can mean the difference between a minor disruption and a debilitating gridlock affecting thousands of commuters. Beyond its operational advantages, the hotline signals a profound philosophical shift: effective transportation management cannot rely solely on enforcement; it demands ongoing collaboration between authorities and the public they serve.

As Lagos solidifies its position as one of Africa’s premier economic and urban hubs, investment in intelligent communication infrastructure will become ever more essential. The 3367 Hotline thus emerges not merely as a reporting channel but as a strategic tool for building a safer, more efficient and technologically enabled transportation environment.

Its launch heralds a future where emergency response is quicker, public engagement is deeper and accountability is more firmly institutionalised. For the millions of Lagosians navigating the city’s vast road network daily, 3367 may ultimately prove to be far more than a short-code. It is a symbol of innovation, a driver of improved service delivery and a powerful affirmation of LASTMA’s resolve to build a transportation system attuned to the realities of a rapidly evolving megacity.

In the unfolding story of Lagos’ transportation transformation, 3367 is poised to become three digits that make an extraordinary difference.
