Mudashiru Obasa, Lagos Assembly Speaker

Lagos Assembly in Turmoil as Ousted Speaker Obasa Storms Complex Amid Security Withdrawal

The Lagos State House of Assembly is embroiled in a deepening crisis following the dramatic return of ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who stormed the complex on Thursday surrounded by security personnel.

The unrest began on January 13 when Obasa was removed from his position over allegations of financial impropriety and gross misconduct, leading to his replacement by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda.

Obasa arrived at the Assembly at exactly 12:05 p.m., accompanied by two loyal lawmakers, and proceeded directly to the Speaker’s office.

Meanwhile, legislators supporting Meranda watched the unfolding drama as tensions escalated. All entry and exit points to the Assembly were sealed off as the situation continued to develop.

The crisis intensified earlier in the day when police escorts assigned to Speaker Meranda, along with security personnel guarding the Assembly complex, were abruptly withdrawn without explanation.

This move left the Speaker and the legislative house dangerously exposed, sparking protests as demonstrators gathered to condemn the security withdrawal.

Obasa, who was removed by his colleagues, has since challenged his ousting at the Lagos High Court, with the case still pending.

The political standoff has raised serious concerns about the motives behind the security withdrawal and the stability of the Assembly, as the power struggle between Obasa and Meranda’s factions continues to unfold.
