The Labour Party (LP) has denounced recent statements made by its former vice presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Datti Baba-Ahmed, describing President Bola Tinubu’s government as “questionably constitutional.”

In a rebuttal issued on Saturday in Kaduna by the party’s National Secretary, Umar Ibrahim, and signed by National Publicity Secretary Arabambi Abayomi, the LP distanced itself from Baba-Ahmed’s remarks, calling them “undemocratic” and warning against actions that could incite unrest.

Abayomi stated that while the LP had contested the 2023 presidential election results up to the Supreme Court, it accepted the court’s final verdict in the interest of national peace, despite dissatisfaction.

He expressed dismay over an April 9 meeting in Abuja involving Abia Governor Alex Otti and Peter Obi, where Baba-Ahmed reportedly repeated his claims about the election’s legitimacy.

The LP also criticized Baba-Ahmed for alleging in a televised interview that Tinubu’s appointments were “fake and illegal” and accusing the government of economic mismanagement.

Abayomi warned that such statements risked inciting public unrest, drawing parallels to the Arab Spring uprisings.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to holding the government accountable but cautioned against inflammatory rhetoric, urging unity during Nigeria’s current challenges.

It further condemned Governor Otti’s alleged “doomsday” warning against the Julius Abure-led LP leadership as a threat and called for enhanced security for its officials.

The LP reiterated its dissociation from Baba-Ahmed’s comments, emphasizing the need for responsible discourse to safeguard national stability.
