President Bola Tinubu with Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso, left

Kwankwaso still open to APC move, says NNPP chieftain

A senior figure in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Abdulmumin Jibrin, has confirmed that discussions about party leader Rabiu Kwankwaso defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are active and possible.

Jibrin, a member of the House of Representatives, stated on Channels Television’s Politics Today that “the doors have not closed” on talks between the former Kano governor and President Bola Tinubu’s party.

“As far as that is concerned, he has always maintained that his doors are open, our doors are open for discussions. Everything is a possibility,” Jibrin said.

The speculation has intensified as political realignments for the 2027 elections begin. However, Jibrin suggested that internal resistance from local power brokers within the Kano APC, who may feel threatened by the arrival of a major political force, could be an obstacle.

He described Kwankwaso’s Kwankwasiyya movement as a potent political bloc that cannot be ignored. Jibrin’s own recent meeting with President Tinubu had fueled defection rumors, though the NNPP stated it would not punish him for it.

While not confirming his own departure, Jibrin remained ambiguous, stating, “Well, I keep saying everything is a possibility.” He also asserted his political independence, noting that at his age, he does not need Kwankwaso’s permission to leave the NNPP.

This comes after the NNPP’s Kano chairman recently denied rumors that Kwankwaso was planning to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
