Kwankwaso quits NNPP, joins ADC in major political realignment ahead of 2027

Former New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and ex-minister of defence, registered with the ADC on Monday at Gidan Kwankwasiyya in Kano, where he was presented with his membership card in the presence of senior political figures.

Those in attendance included ADC National Chairman and former Senate President David Mark, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Senator Dino Melaye, and former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun.

The move follows Kwankwaso’s resignation from the NNPP, which he announced on Sunday, citing the need for political realignment amid what he described as shifts in Nigeria’s political landscape.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party with immediate effect,” Kwankwaso said in a statement. “As a committed and bona fide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make.

However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.”

Kwankwaso, who was the NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, said his decision came after careful consideration, noting his long-standing involvement with the party and the support he received from its leadership and members.

He expressed appreciation to the NNPP National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and other party organs, as well as members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, for their loyalty and commitment.

“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.
