Kidney Damage Signs At Night: Frequent Urination And 5 More Symptoms To Watch For
Kidney Damage Symptoms At Night: Kidney damage is when your kidneys lose their ability to function properly, which is vital for filtering out waste and excess fluids from your bloodstream. Ithe condition can stem from various factors, and we usually break them down into two types: acute and chronic causes. Acute kidney injury (AKI) often occurs suddenly due to situations like dehydration, infections, or exposure to harmful substances. In contrast, chronic kidney disease (CKD) develops gradually, typically resulting from long-term conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or glomerulonephritis. Furthermore, certain medications, particularly long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can lead to kidney problems. Spotting kidney damage early on is key to effective treatment.
Kidney damage can manifest in various ways, often becoming more noticeable during the night. In this article, we look at the top 5 signs of kidney damage that can show up at nighttime after 10 PM.
Kidney Damage Symptoms At Night
Here are some of the warning signs and symptoms of kidney damage that are more prominent at night after 10pm:
Frequent Urination At Night
One of the most common signs of kidney damage is frequent urination, especially at night, known as nocturia. Patients suffering from this condition may find it difficult to sleep at night, due to frequent urgency to pee. This increased urge can disrupt sleep and lead to fatigue during the day. It’s essential to monitor how often you wake up at night; if it’s more than once or twice, it may be time to consult a healthcare professional.
Unusually Swollen Legs, Feet And Hands
Another warning sign is swelling in the hands, feet, or face, particularly noticeable at night. This swelling, or edema, occurs due to the kidneys’ inability to effectively filter excess fluids from the body. When lying down, gravity can cause fluid to redistribute, leading to noticeable puffiness. If you experience this symptom regularly, it could indicate that your kidneys are struggling to maintain fluid balance.
Dark Yellowish Urine
The colour of your urine can provide critical insights into your kidney health. If you notice that your urine appears darker or more concentrated during nighttime hours, it may be a sign of dehydration or kidney issues. Healthy kidneys should produce urine that is light yellow. Dark urine can indicate that the kidneys are not filtering waste effectively, warranting further investigation.
Weakness
Kidney damage can lead to a buildup of toxins in the body, resulting in fatigue and weakness, particularly noticeable in the evening. This fatigue often worsens as the day progresses, making it difficult to complete daily tasks. If you find yourself feeling unusually tired or weak at night, it might be a sign that your kidneys are not functioning optimally.
Severe Breathing Difficulties at Night
Shortness of breath especially at night is another symptom of kidney damage that shouldn’t be missed. This can occur due to fluid accumulation in the lungs, a condition known as pulmonary edema, which can arise from kidney dysfunction. If you experience difficulty breathing at night, it’s crucial to seek medical attention, as this may indicate a serious health concern.
How To Manage Kidney Damage
Quit smoking
Drink lots of fluid
Manage your diabetes (blood sugar levels)
Control your blood pressure levels
“Our lifestyle choices play a vital role in kidney health. Poor dietary habits, such as consuming too much salt and sugar, can lead to obesity and high blood pressure, further increasing the risk of kidney damage. Smoking and excessive alcohol intake can exacerbate these issues. Staying hydrated, maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and keeping a healthy weight are all essential steps to protect kidney function,” said Dr Pratibha Goswami, Belle Vue Hospitals, Kolkata. Understand the importance of taking note of what your body is trying to tell you.
