Kebbi Govt blasts ex-AGF Malami as ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ over 2027 gov. bid

The Kebbi State Government has criticised former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, following reports that he has joined the race for the 2027 governorship election under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement on Sunday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Nasir Idris, Yahaya Sarki, the government attacked Malami over his comments against the present administration. Sarki described the former minister as “a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” accusing him of being among those responsible for many of the problems currently affecting Kebbi State and Nigeria.

The state government said Malami has every legal right to contest for political office, but argued that his recent criticisms of the current government were “filled with falsehoods and political hypocrisy.”

According to the statement, the insecurity, poverty, poor education system, and economic struggles mentioned by Malami were problems that worsened during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, where Malami served as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.

The government also accused several former officials who worked in Abuja between 2015 and 2023 of focusing more on personal gain instead of solving the country’s growing economic and security challenges.

It further claimed that Malami and some of his allies failed to take strong action against rising insecurity and humanitarian problems during their time in office.

Defending the current administration, the state government listed several projects and achievements under Governor Idris since he assumed office in 2023.

According to the statement, the administration has built thousands of classrooms across the state, established new schools, and distributed learning materials to improve education.

The government also said more than 2,000 teachers had been employed, while others received training aimed at improving teaching standards.

In the health sector, officials stated that renovation works are ongoing in all 31 general hospitals across Kebbi State.

It added that major projects in Birnin Kebbi, Argungu, Yauri, Zuru, and Bunza have either been completed or are close to completion.

The statement also highlighted improvements at Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital as part of efforts to enhance healthcare services in the state.

On security, the government argued that banditry and terrorism increased greatly during Malami’s years as Attorney-General, accusing him of failing to speak strongly against the violence affecting Kebbi and other parts of the country at the time.

The state government maintained that the present administration inherited weak institutions but is making efforts to restore public confidence and rebuild governance structures.

Sarki also said people who allegedly contributed to Nigeria’s governance problems cannot now present themselves as agents of change.

The reaction from the Kebbi State Government came shortly after Malami criticised the administration following his decision to obtain the ADC governorship nomination form ahead of the 2027 election.
