Senator Sunday Marshall Katung has won the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Kaduna-South Senatorial District, beating former Senator Danjuma Tella Laah and Michael Auta in a closely contested vote held across the district’s eight local government areas.
The Returning Officer, Prof. John Laah from the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, announced the results at the collation centre in the Jema’a Local Government Secretariat on Monday. He described the exercise as free, fair, and peaceful.
According to the results, voting took place in Kagarko, Sanga, Kauru, Zangon Kataf, Kaura, Jema’a, Jaba, and Kachia, where delegates cast their ballots for the three aspirants. Katung secured 7,453 votes, while Laah polled 1,370 votes and Michael Ayuba Auta finished third with 878 votes.
Prof. Laah commended party stakeholders, security agencies, and delegates for ensuring a smooth and orderly process across the senatorial district. With this victory, Senator Katung has secured the APC ticket for the upcoming general election.
Speaking to journalists after the results were announced, the Executive Chairman of Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, Joseph Bege Gaiya, said the outcome truly reflected the grassroots’ wishes. He stated that the conduct and result demonstrated the strength of internal democracy within the party and reinforced public confidence in the APC’s political direction in the area.
Gaiya expressed confidence that the local government would deliver overwhelming support for Senator Katung, Governor Uba Sani, and all other APC candidates in the next general elections.
He noted that the people of Zangon Kataf remain committed to the current administration’s development agenda, adding that the high participation and outcome showed a collective desire for continuity, stability, and better governance.
He urged all stakeholders and aggrieved aspirants to unite, stressing that reconciliation would be key to strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The people have spoken through a transparent process, and we must all work together to ensure victory for our party at all levels,” he said.
Separately, Samira Jibrin announced the results for the Kaduna Central Senatorial primary, where Shehu Sani emerged winner with 9,105 votes. Other contenders included Yusuf Zailani, who scored 1,021 votes, and Shettima Yerima, who withdrew from the race but still recorded 1,253 votes.
Addressing journalists from his home in Kaduna, Shehu Sani thanked President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani for their unwavering support.
“There is no better representation of the people of Kaduna State than me being their lawmaker and Uba Sani being the governor,” he said.
He also thanked his constituents for giving him the chance to represent them for a second time. “I also thank Yerima Shettima for stepping down from the race. And those who did not step down, we should join hands to move the party forward.”
He noted the many challenges facing the nation, including poverty and unemployment, and said the National Assembly is a pillar of democracy. “I will go there to ensure my people are represented by bringing federal presence to my constituency.”
