Kano lawmakers back Gov’s planned defection to APC, cite legal fears from NNPP crisis

Members of the Kano State House of Assembly have unanimously voiced support for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s expected move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

They warn that staying with the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), which is embroiled in serious legal battles and internal strife, poses a significant threat to the governor and other elected officials.

Citing the political crisis in Zamfara State—where the APC lost its electoral victories in 2019 due to internal disputes—the legislators fear a similar judicial outcome could overturn their own mandates if they remain in the NNPP.

The party is currently divided by rival leadership factions and ongoing court cases, creating uncertainty about its legal status and the validity of its candidate nominations.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini emphasized that the Assembly cannot ignore these dangers.

He said an existing court judgment that recognizes a specific NNPP faction, heightened the risk of judicial removal for officeholders affiliated with the party.

Hussaini stated that lawmakers are actively consulting with Governor Yusuf and NNPP leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to coordinate what he called a “strategic and timely” defection.

The goal, he said, is to protect the electorate’s mandate by switching to a more stable political platform, with the APC being a primary consideration.
