Kano Governor Abba Yusuf resigns from NNPP, set for APC defection alongside dozens of officials

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), effective January 23, 2026.

His resignation comes ahead of an expected defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In his resignation letter addressed to the NNPP ward chairman in Gwale Local Government, Yusuf cited persistent internal divisions, leadership disagreements, and ongoing legal battles within the party as his reasons for leaving.

He stated that the resulting disenfranchisement and “irreconcilable” cracks had created uncertainty, and his resignation was, in his view, in the best interest of Kano State.

The governor’s exit is not isolated. He is reportedly moving to the APC alongside a significant bloc of Kano politicians, including 21 state assembly members, 8 members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen.

This development follows a recent meeting between Governor Yusuf and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja, after which Yusuf had publicly disclosed his plan to join the APC.
