Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo
Kano Assembly denies impeachment plot against Deputy Governor, cites “baseless” rumors
The Kano State House of Assembly has formally denied viral reports of a plot to remove Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo from office.
In a statement aimed at calming political tensions, the legislature insisted no such plan exists. Addressing journalists on Saturday, the Assembly’s Public Relations Officer, Kamaluddeen Shawai, dismissed the rumors as “baseless and misleading.”
He stated that the claims were fabricated to create unnecessary unrest and confirmed that the House has not received any motion or begun any process targeting the Deputy Governor’s removal.
“There is absolutely no motion or initiative within the House to remove the deputy governor. These reports are false and should be disregarded by the public. The deputy governor continues to serve in his capacity with full support from the House,” Shawai said.
He emphasized that the Assembly is focused on lawmaking and oversight, not “speculative political manoeuvres,” and urged media and the public to verify sensitive information to maintain political stability.
Despite this denial, the political climate in Kano remains tense. The friction surfaced after the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, publicly suggested Gwarzo should “honourably resign.” Waiya contended that the Deputy Governor’s position is untenable after he refused to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) with his principal.
While Gwarzo has not publicly addressed the impeachment rumors, sources confirm he remains engaged in his official duties. The ideological divide is prominent, as Gwarzo maintains loyalty to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
This follows Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection to the APC on January 26, a move that included 22 state lawmakers, eight House of Representatives members, and all 44 local government chairmen.
