JUST IN: Tinubu, Governors Hold Meeting With NLC in Aso Villa Over 2027

Political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections intensified on Tuesday as President Bola Tinubu met with governors and Nigeria Labour Congress leadership at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The meeting, hosted by the Progressive Governors Forum at the State House Banquet Hall, featured the President as Special Guest of Honour in what officials described as an effort to deepen dialogue amid mounting economic pressures and shifting political calculations.

Sources familiar with the discussions revealed that labour leaders came prepared to present a formal charter of demands directly to the President, seeking concrete commitments on wages, job security and protections for workers affected by economic reforms and climate policies.

Among the key demands are the establishment of a Just Transition Fund to cushion workers impacted by policy changes, large-scale green job creation, skills development programmes and expanded social protection schemes.

The NLC is also pushing for structured dialogue mechanisms between government, employers and unions.

The meeting carries significant political weight, observers note, given the NLC’s formidable mobilisation capacity across essential sectors and its potential to shape public opinion as the 2027 elections approach.

Recent disputes over inflation, fuel subsidy removal and cost-of-living pressures have tested labour-government relations, making Tuesday’s engagement critical.

Labour representatives are also seeking guarantees against mass layoffs, investments in renewable energy industries, government-backed retraining programmes, improved pensions, expanded healthcare coverage and formal inclusion in economic policy discussions.

A labour leader described the direct engagement at Aso Rock as an attempt “to reset the narrative — or prevent escalation,” adding that “labour is a decisive political force heading into 2027 elections.”

The involvement of Progressive Governors signals coordinated political alignment ahead of the polls, with the summit’s outcome likely determining whether negotiation replaces street protests as labour’s primary channel of influence.
