Joint forces repel major terror assault in Chibok, thwart bandits in Northwest
CHIBOK, Borno State – In a decisive counter-terrorism operation, troops of the 28 Task Force Brigade, Sector 4 under Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), supported by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), foiled a massive pre-dawn assault on Chibok by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram terrorists on Saturday.
The insurgent force, estimated at over 300 fighters, launched a coordinated, multi-directional attack on the community around 3:00 a.m., attempting to breach military defensive positions.
A fierce two-hour firefight ensued, with ground troops utilizing superior firepower and tactical manoeuvres to contain the onslaught.
“The troops were alert and professionally contained the attack. There was no casualty on our side, and no equipment was affected,” a security source confirmed.
After forcing the terrorists to retreat toward the Timbuktu Triangle, ground forces called in air support. NAF combat aircraft were immediately deployed, executing at least four major precision airstrikes along the enemy’s escape routes.
These strikes, guided by real-time intelligence from the 28 Task Force Brigade, decimated clusters of fleeing fighters attempting to regroup.
The operation was further bolstered by an unmanned aerial platform that provided continuous surveillance and conducted high-precision strikes of its own.
Security sources confirmed the combined ground and air operations inflicted “substantial losses” on the insurgents, effectively neutralizing their ability to regroup after the failed attack.
In a separate development in the Northwest, security forces recorded significant breakthroughs against banditry and kidnapping in Sokoto and Niger States.
In Sokoto State, troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA repelled an armed bandit assault on Gidan Koro village in Kwargaba District late Tuesday night.
The attackers, armed with sophisticated weapons, had invaded the community, firing sporadically and abducting several residents along with livestock.
A swift military response led to a gun duel that forced the bandits to retreat. All abducted victims were rescued unhurt, and the stolen animals were recovered.
Meanwhile, in Niger State, police apprehended four suspected kidnappers linked to the abduction of ten people in the Mashegu Local Government Area.
The suspects were tracked to a hideout in the Ibbi Forest, and interrogations led to the identification of several accomplices.
A subsequent investigation resulted in a further arrest, with one suspect confessing that the group was responsible for a series of kidnappings and cattle rustling in the area.
Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing as security forces intensify efforts to dismantle criminal networks across the region.
