INEC prepares against lapses, set 11,355 BVAS for Kogi, Bayelsa, Imo polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission is putting finishing touches to its preparations for the off-season November 11 governorship elections in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo states, deploying 11,355 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System machines for voter accreditation exercise in the states.

Indications from INEC from one of its top official in the commission, on Sunday, are that the commission is top-notch in its preparations to avoid lapses that would put it on the spot in the minds of the public.

According to INEC records, Bayelsa State has 2,244 polling units; with Kogi, 3,508 polling units and Imo, 4,758 polling units.

Indeed, the presidential and National Assembly elections of February 25, 2023, were marred by the BVAS malfunction and had been subject of debates and controversies among Nigerians.

However, during reviews of the 2023 polls, with BVAS deployed, the commission recorded a 98 per cent success rate.

The INEC source gave the assurance that the commission would perform better in the upcoming off-season governorship elections.

He stated, “2,400 BVAS would be deployed to Bayelsa State while 5,079 and 3,876 BVAS would be used in Imo and Kogi, respectively.

“The BVAS never malfunctioned. However, we hoped to do more than what we did on  March 18, 2023.”
