Gunmen have besieged the Adamawa State Police Headquarters early Wednesday morning, with residents of Yola scampering helter shelter.

Sounds of gunshot were heard early morning Wednesday for at least 30 minutes, at the state Police headquarters, located at the heart of Jimeta community in Yola North Local Government Area.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, confirmed the attack, but said things were under control.

Nguroje said the attack was repelled, but the identities of those behind it was unknown.

One source said the attackers were military personnel on a revenge mission, following the alleged killing of a military officer by the police.

The police sources indicated that investigations were ongoing to ascertain the cause of the attack and those behind it.

The strange incident is coming days after the face-off between officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and personnel of the Nigerian Air Force.

Air Force personnel had invaded EFCC head office in Kaduna State to effect the release of their colleagues arrested over alleged fraud.

The military personnel and security operatives guarding the commission almost exchanged gunfire, according to sources.

The anti-graft agency later issued a statement to say it would not be intimidated in the course of duty.

Inter-agency clash sometimes occur between operatives, and have led to exchange of gunfire.
