Gumsu Abacha, daughter of the late military leader Sani Abacha, has taken to social media to respond to former military president Ibrahim Babangida’s recent claims about her father’s role in the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. In a cryptic post on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter), Gumsu simply wrote, “Weakling,” sparking widespread discussion.

Her message comes in the wake of the launch of Babangida’s autobiography, *A Journey in Service*, in Abuja on Thursday. In the book, Babangida addresses the contentious annulment of the June 12 election, which was won by the late MKO Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Babangida claims he was unaware of the decision to cancel the election, stating that his second-in-command’s press secretary made the announcement without his consent while he was in Katsina.

Babangida further alleges that those who opposed the election were led by Abacha, his then-chief of defence staff, who later became head of state. Critics, however, have accused Babangida of attempting to shift blame onto Abacha while portraying himself in a more favorable light. Many believe his account is an effort to rewrite history and absolve himself of responsibility.

Gumsu’s post, along with her sharing of similar viewpoints, suggests she views Babangida’s claims as an attempt to distort the historical narrative. With her father no longer alive to defend himself, she appears to believe he is being unfairly targeted and blamed for the annulment.
