Gov. Yusuf’s defection to APC postponed as Kano political drama deepens

The scheduled defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been delayed.

Initially set for January 5, 2026, the move has been rescheduled to January 12, 2026.

A source close to the governor stated that Yusuf requested the extension during a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja on Friday.

The governor reportedly seeks more time to consult with state legislators and key stakeholders who have not yet fully endorsed the planned political shift.

The potential defection has stirred considerable political activity in Kano, a major center of northern Nigerian politics. Meanwhile, the NNPP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, has denied rumors of an internal exodus from the party’s Kwankwasiyya movement.

Johnson clarified that Governor Yusuf has not formally notified the party’s leadership of any intention to defect and dismissed speculation that NNPP leader Rabiu Kwankwaso had approved such a move.
