FRSC, MEMAN step up tanker safety drive with Nationwide Safe-To-Load Training for Officers
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) have ramped up efforts to reduce petroleum tanker accidents through a nationwide Safe-To-Load (S-T-L) training programme for enforcement officers.
This initiative, part of a partnership between the two organisations that began in 2019, is designed to strengthen safety compliance in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector and improve overall road safety outcomes.
Speaking at the South-South regional training session held in Port Harcourt, MEMAN’s Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, Clement Isong—represented by Operations Manager Moses Okoh—reaffirmed the association’s dedication to promoting safety in petroleum product transportation. He noted that the Safe-To-Load initiative aligns with the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety, which aims to reduce road traffic fatalities and injuries.
According to Isong, achieving lasting reductions in tanker-related crashes requires attention to five critical areas: safer road infrastructure, safer vehicles, responsible road user behaviour, improved post-crash response, and stronger road safety management. He also stressed the importance of collaboration among regulators, enforcement agencies, and industry stakeholders in tackling petroleum truck accidents on Nigerian roads.
Isong commended stakeholders present at the training’s opening, including the South-South Regional Coordinator of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Ibrahim Dimowo; the FRSC Assistant Corps Marshal, Henry Banemesia; and the Rivers State Sector Commander, F. A. Ajatta. The officials declared the session open on Monday, April 13, 2026, and praised the facilitators for equipping FRSC officers with the technical knowledge needed to enforce Safe-To-Load regulations.
The 2026 S-T-L training programme began in Lagos on April 9, continued in Port Harcourt, and is scheduled to conclude tomorrow in the Federal Capital Territory.
