Former Super Eagles Midfielder Henry Nwosu Dies at 62

Henry Nwosu, a former midfielder for the Super Eagles and member of Nigeria’s victorious 1980 Africa Cup of Nations squad, has passed away at the age of 62.

His former teammate, Segun Odegbami, announced the death on social media on Saturday. According to Odegbami, Nwosu had been in intensive care at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja since Wednesday.

“Henry Nwosu passes on! After five days in hospital battling for his life, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4:00 am this morning,” Odegbami wrote. “It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu, MON. May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven.”

As the youngest member of the 1980 AFCON squad, Nwosu was celebrated for his role in helping the then-named Green Eagles secure Nigeria’s first continental title on home soil.
