First Lady wishes terrorism is stamped out at UN building bombing anniversary

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, would be happy if terrorism is stamped out of the world, especially because of its consequences and impact on the society.

The First Lady spoke at the wreath-laying, in Abuja, in honour of victims of the United Nations Building bombing in 2011.

The First Lady said the global community must channel more energy towards fostering peace, promoting dialogue and combating the forces of hatred and division.

She said the world must not only draw strength from the sacrifice of those serving the cause of peace, but recommit to the values of unity, understanding and cooperation that the UN represents.

The Under Secretary General of UN, Office of Counterterrorism, Valdimir Voronkov, harped on the need for solidarity and support for victims of terrorism across the world, as terrorism continues to threaten peace and security, leaving in its trail hundreds of thousands of victims and survivors.

He said: “Nigeria knows the consequences of terrorism within and around its borders too well. Indeed, parts of Africa have experienced the highest impact of terrorism for many years.

“The UN itself is not immune from terrorism. Two weeks ago, we marked the 20th anniversary of the devastating attack on Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, on August 19, 2003.”

The solemn and brief wreath-laying was witnessed by heads of some of the UN agencies in Nigeria.
