FIFA confirms Nigeria’s absence from World Cup play-offs, ending Super Eagles’ appeal hopes
Nigeria’s bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially ended after FIFA confirmed the six teams set to compete in the inter-confederation play-off tournament, with DR Congo named as Africa’s sole representative.
In an accreditation notice issued to journalists, FIFA detailed the format of the upcoming play-offs and listed the participating nations—omitting Nigeria and making no reference to any pending disciplinary action.
The development effectively shuts the door on the Super Eagles’ appeal against their elimination by DR Congo in the CAF play-offs in November 2025. Nigeria fell in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw, prompting the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to file a formal protest alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players.
The NFF had hoped to have the result overturned and secure a place in the inter-continental play-offs—the final route to the expanded 2026 tournament. However, FIFA’s latest communication suggests the original result stands, as no revision to the qualified teams was indicated.
“The FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament will see six teams fight it out for the final two places,” FIFA stated. “All of the six teams have now been decided, with Bolivia, Congo DR, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname confirmed as qualifiers.”
The confirmation marks a devastating end to Nigeria’s World Cup campaign, leaving a nation with a proud tournament history on the outside looking in as the final slots for 2026 are contested.
