FG’s Special Works Programme: Why the delay in payment? Ask Aliyu Khalid and Jamila Yunusa

By Aliyu Khalid and Jamila Yunusa

SIR: Here is drawing the attention of Minister of Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, SAN, to the delay in the payment of stipends to participants in the Special Public Works programme (SPWP) three months after their exit from the program.

It would be recalled that the federal government engaged 774,000 youths across the country under the programme.

Interestingly, President Muhammadu Buhari graciously approved the payment of all the three months stipends for the beneficiaries.

However, in spite of the directive to the National Directorate of Employment, NDE, to compile the list of the beneficiaries and ensure fraud-free payment, 99% of the participants are yet to receive their first payments.

Though the minister attributed the delay in the payment to only two banks and assured it will be paid before the second payment, nothing has been done two months after.

We passionately appeal to honourable minister to intervene and ensure that these approved stipends are paid as directed by Mr President.
