Fears as CAF may decide on Super Eagles-Libyan controversial match Tuesday
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) may take a decision next Tuesday, October 22, 2024 on the controversial 2025 AFCON qualifier between the Super Eagles and Libya slated for Benina.
Indeed, the matter was referred to CAF disciplinary board, which will meet in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Tuesday.
Libya were slated to welcomed the Super Eagles Tuesday night in Benina, near Benghazi, after both teams first clashed in Uyo in continuation of the 2023 AFCON qualifying series.
But the Group D match was postponed by CAF after the Super Eagles were held for over 20 hours at an abandoned airport in Libya.
The Super Eagles were en route to Benghazi for Match Day 4 of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier when the Libyan authorities unexpectedly revoked their landing clearance. Without prior notice, the plane was diverted to an alternative airport, which lacked the necessary facilities to accommodate the team, leaving them stranded without food, water, or phone connections.
Football experts said Libya breached CAF fair play regulations and will be sanctioned accordingly.
It is said that Libya may forfeit the match and also be fined, while some observers said the match will be replayed at a neutral venue.
