FCT Minister Wike Vows Tough Action Against Manhole Cover Vandals
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged that individuals arrested for their alleged involvement in the theft and removal of sewage manhole covers on Abuja highways will face the full force of the law to deter others.
Wike also assured that buyers and users of the vandalized manhole covers and other public infrastructure will be prosecuted for economic sabotage and endangering lives.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, it was revealed that over 50 suspects have been arrested for vandalizing and stealing manhole covers in the FCT, with 25 stolen covers recovered.
This, Wike emphasized, highlights the administration’s zero tolerance for criminal acts, especially the destruction of public assets.
The Minister commended security agencies for their swift action, describing their collaboration as “fantastic” and reassuring FCT residents of the safety of their lives and property.
He also applauded Nigerians for their patriotic stance against vandalism, urging them to safeguard public amenities and use social media positively to report such incidents.
“These thieves and buyers of public infrastructure are Nigerians who live among us. It is crucial for patriotic citizens to expose them before they carry out their acts,” Wike said.
He further encouraged residents to remain vigilant and promised that the government would act swiftly to address such issues.
