Farooq Kperogi Apologizes to Aisha Buhari Over Divorce Claim, Admits “Lapse in Judgment”

Nigerian academic and columnist based in the United States, Farooq Kperogi, has publicly apologized to former First Lady Aisha Buhari for a Facebook post in which he alleged that she had divorced her late husband, ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, before his death.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Sunday, Kperogi described his July 16 post titled “Aisha Buhari, Divorce, and Forgiveness Claim” as one of his “worst and cruelest lapses in judgment.” He acknowledged the distress it caused the former First Lady and her associates.
While standing by the credibility of his unnamed source, Kperogi admitted that the information was never meant to be made public. “My source, whose integrity is unimpeachable, insists the information is accurate, but never intended for it to become public,” he wrote. “Publishing it was my mistake—not every well-sourced detail should be shared.”
The controversial post had sparked widespread reactions after Kperogi claimed that Aisha and the late president had divorced before his passing and that Buhari had sought her forgiveness beforehand. The claim drew intense scrutiny online.
Kperogi revealed that Alhaji Sani Zorro, a former aide to Aisha Buhari, had contacted him to dispute the report, conveying her stance that her marriage remained intact until her husband’s death. “I will not argue with Alhaji Sani, who relayed Mrs. Buhari’s position,” he said, referencing a proverb by the late MKO Abiola: “No one can give you a haircut in your absence.”
He emphasized that Aisha Buhari’s account of her marital life should be respected as definitive, regardless of other claims. Taking full responsibility, Kperogi admitted the post was an ethical misstep. “I shouldn’t have shared it publicly. Doing so violated my moral principles,” he stated, adding that his intent was never malicious.
Concluding with a sincere apology, he wrote: “To Mrs. Aisha Buhari, I offer my heartfelt and unreserved apology for the needless hurt I caused. I am truly sorry.”
