Ex-OAU VC, Prof Cyril Onwumechili, dies at 91

A former Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Professor Cyril Agodi Onwumechili, is dead.
Aged 91 years, Professor Onwumechili OAU’s fourth substantive Vice-Chancellor.
A release by the Public Relations Officer of the university, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that Professor Onwumechili, was an exceptional academic, visionary leader, and compassionate individual who made invaluable contributions to the growth and success of the university.
During his tenure from 1979 to 1982, he played a crucial role in shaping the university’s trajectory, upholding its commitment to academic rigor, innovation, and societal impact, and steering it toward excellence.
The OAU management acknowledged that the late Vice-Chancellor was a renowned academic of high repute and a detribalized Nigerian.
Professor Simeon Bamire, the current Vice-Chancellor, highlighting the late vice chancellor’s progressive policies, the vibrant academic community, and commitment to inclusivity.
He emphasized that the late former VC left an indelible mark on the 62-year-old University and the countless lives he touched.
