Energy Commission unveils Solar PV Module assembling plant

The need to enhance electricity access in Nigeria at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Commission’s new solar photovoltaic (PV) module assembling plant is being canvassed by the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN).

The Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, stated this at an event held at the Ihunekwagu Autonomous Community, Akpugo, Nkanu West Local Government, Enugu State.

Dr Abdullahi, who stressed the significance to the energy sector, restated the inefficiencies of the current Nigerian grid system, which leaves many regions without reliable power.

The commission’s boss, who highlighted photovoltaic electricity as a key solution, stressed the need for a sustainable and decentralized power source capable of reaching even the most remote areas.

According to him, the new assembling plant represents a giant leap toward achieving energy security, sustainability, and technological progress in Nigeria.

He said, “This assembling plant is not just a technological advancement; it is a testament to our dedication to fostering home-grown innovation and self-reliance. It also perfectly aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda under the leadership of His Excellency, President Ahmed Bola Tinubu.”

Stating that the Energy Commission is committed to renewable energy research and development, he said: ”The new plant is a direct result of this commitment, translating research outputs into practical, indigenous solutions that promise to transform Nigeria’s energy landscape.

”The project will reduce reliance on imported PV modules, lower costs, and make solar energy more accessible to Nigerian households.”

Dr. Abdullahi praised the contributions of research institutions and individuals who have previously worked on PV module production with limited resources.

He noted that the new facility would significantly boost the Commission’s capacity to domesticate solar PV technology in Nigeria, create jobs, and offer opportunities for youth and skilled professionals in the renewable energy sector.

He also expressed gratitude to Chief Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, for his support and commitment to the project.

“Your belief in this project and your commitment to its success have been invaluable. Your leadership has made it possible for us to reach this milestone,” Dr. Abdullahi said.

The ceremony was attended by notable guests, including House of Representatives members from Enugu State and Directors-General of NASRDA, NNMDA, PRODA, NICFOST, NACETEM, NITR, and NBTI.

Abdullahi recently emphasized the critical role of the Technical Committee on Minimum Energy Performance Standards for air conditioners in Nigeria.

He highlighted the importance of the committee’s task in advancing energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting sustainable economic growth.

“The task before you today, the Technical Committee, is critical and impactful. Your review and recommendations will shape the future of air conditioning standards in Nigeria, driving advancement in energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and fostering sustainable economic growth,” Dr Abdullahi stated.
