The Vice Chancellor of Elizade University, Prof. Okukayode Amund, has said fleeing Nigerians out of the country in large numbers are misguided.

Prof. Amund said using the ‘japa’ syndrome as an excuse to travel abroad is equivalent to avoiding problems that will still be present when they return home.

The Vice Chancellor spoke at a press conference to announce the institution’s combined 6th and 7th convocation ceremonies.

He said Nigerians must endeavour to make their country better, stressing that “there is nothing that is over there that we cannot achieve here. Where they are going is the same environment as we have here.”

According to him, “It is because people are not contented with what they have, and that is the main driver of going abroad. When they go there, they go to do menial jobs. Those who are doing it are misguided.”

Prof. Amund disclosed that 489 students will graduate from the university in total, while outlinining the convocation ceremonies for the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 sessions.

He said of the graduating students, 42 graduated with First Class, 205 graduated with Second Class (Upper), 199 graduated with Second Class (Lower), and 39 graduated with Third Class.

Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor, the Vice President of Liberia, will deliver the convocation lecture with the theme “Africa Renaissance: Key for New Global Leadership Paradigm,” according to Prof. Amund.
