Ekiti establishes electricity regulatory bureau
Ekiti state has announced the creation of the State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (SERB) to supervise electricity-related issues and guarantee standards in the state’s various market segments.
This comes about as a result of the Ekiti State Electricity Power Sector Act of 2023 being signed into law by Governor Biodun Oyebanji in October 2023.
A government statement issued in Ado-Ekiti stated that the Bureau will act as the highest authority on electrical regulation in the state.
Its key responsibilities include enforcing the law and issuing licenses and permits for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.
Additionally, the Bureau will enforce yearly energy efficiency compliance certification for energy product vendors and marketers and certify energy professionals, contractors, and companies.
The establishment of the SERB also involves transferring functions previously performed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the state level.
These include electrical inspection, monitoring, and certification of new and existing electricity networks, as well as enforcing statutory technical electrical standards and regulations for safety and security.
During a recent meeting with the Bureau’s staff in Ado-Ekiti, the Executive Secretary, Dare David, reiterated the Oyebanji administration’s commitment to the welfare of the people, particularly in ensuring an efficient and effective independent electricity market in the state.
He commended the administration for the timely completion and operation of the 5-megawatt Independent Power Project, which currently provides uninterrupted power supply to government offices and key installations in the State Capital.
Establishing the State Electricity Regulatory Bureau is seen as a significant step towards enhancing electricity governance and improving service delivery in Ekiti State.
