Edo Governor Condemns Killing of 16 Hunters, Vows Justice as 14 Suspects Arrested

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has denounced the brutal killing of 16 hunters in Udune, Uromi Local Government Area, labeling the attack as barbaric and unacceptable.
Governor Okpebholo expressed his grief during a condolence visit to Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, at the Government House on Monday.
“I was deeply saddened by this tragic incident. Upon my return, I met with my Hausa brothers, who stood by me during my election campaign,” he said.
The governor disclosed that President Bola Tinubu had ordered the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure they face the full wrath of the law.
“We have activated stringent security measures to hold all those responsible accountable. Investigations are already underway to bring the culprits to justice,” he added.
Okpebholo described the attack as alarming, stressing that Nigeria upholds the sanctity of human life.
“This cowardly act goes against the core values of our society, which are anchored in both Islamic and Christian teachings. So far, 14 suspects have been arrested in connection with the killings. Kano holds a special place in my heart, and we remain committed to the principle of being our brother’s keeper,” he stated.
In his response, Governor Yusuf praised Okpebholo for his prompt response to the security breach.
“We have taken decisive steps to prevent any reprisal attacks. We also urge that the arrested suspects be publicly paraded to reassure the victims’ families and ensure transparency in the justice process,” Yusuf said.
He further called on Governor Okpebholo to ensure adequate compensation for the bereaved families and commended President Tinubu for his swift intervention in directing security agencies to pursue the attackers.
