Edo Accountant General, four other govt officials in EFCC’s custody
The Edo State Accountant General, Mr Julius Anelu, and four officials of the outgoing government have allegedly been arrested by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC.
Indications are that the officials were arrested for being signatories to the state government’s accounts where huge funds were allegedly withdrawn.
The sources added that they were arrested on Thursday after they had been called in for a briefing.
Sources said the arrested staff may be detained till November 12, on the day of the termination of the tenure of the outgoing governor of Edo State.
However, government activities such as emoluments due to civil servants, pensions, and other public servants, which were supposed tohave been paid are affected by the arrest.
Also, other statutory payments such as security bills and other obligations were affected by the arrest.
But EFCC spokesman in the Benin Zonal office in the state, Williams Oseghale, will not talk on the issue, directing reporters to the Commission’s spokesman, Dele Oyewale.
However, Oyewale, as at the time of filing this report, was yet to respond to calls.
