ECOWAS Parliament tasks members on service to the people, By Taiye Agbaje
The ECOWAS Parliament has called on its members to remain committed in the discharge of their duties to the people of the sub-region who they represent.
The Speaker of the Parliament, RT. Hon Sidie Mohamed Tunis, gave the charge at the closing ceremony of the 2023 Fusrt Ordinary Session of the regional legislature in Abuja.
Represented by the 2nd Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Boucary Sani Malam Chaibou, Tunis said the supreme interest of the citizens of the community must always guide all decision-making processes, to ensure that such decisions translate to growth and development in all spheres of their lives.
“Let us remember that our success and progress is measured by the quality of life of our people.
“In his speech, delivered in the Constituent Assembly of India on 14 August 1947, Pandit Nheru, the First Prime Minister of the Dominion of India averred that
‘long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge…at the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps,…we have to labour and to work, and work hard, to give reality to our dreams…’
“For me, the prime minister was speaking directly to us, urging us not to relent nor rest, until we achieve our cardinal goal of improving the standard of living of our people through effective representation and policy implementation,” he said.
Tunis also congratulated the new members and colleagues who have retained their seats in the parliamentary elections across the sub-region.
“Let me remind you that the call to service is sacrosanct and hallowed; therefore, members must acquit themselves creditably and diligently.
“I wish you well in the conduct of your duties to the people who have vested their trust in your abilities to represent them,” the speaker said.
