ECN boss recommits to driving Nigeria’s energy efficiency
The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, has expressed renewed commitment to providin energy for Nigerians, stressing the critical role of the Technical Committee on Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for air conditioners in the country.
Abdullahi, who spoke in a recent interview, emphasized the importance of the committee’s task in advancing energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting sustainable economic growth.
According to him, “The task before you today, the Technical Committee, is critical and impactful. Your review and recommendations will shape the future of air conditioning standards in Nigeria, driving advancement in energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and fostering sustainable economic growth.
“As you embark on this important review, I urge you to approach your deliberations with the utmost diligence, expertise, and collaborative spirit. Your work will not only influence national standards but also contribute to our global commitment to combat climate change.
“The meeting, which is part of the project “Scaling Up Energy-Efficient and Climate-Friendly Cooling in Nigeria’s Nationality Determined Contribution Revision,” underscores the collaborative efforts between the ECN, the Standard Organisation of Nigeria and the United Nations Environment Programme.
“This review follows a stakeholders’ workshop held on May 15, 2024, and is essential to reinforcing the Commission’s commitment to energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.
“The Clean Cooling Collaborative, a not-for-profit organization, has provided significant support to the MEPS project.
“This collaboration aims to enhance energy efficiency and promote climate-friendly cooling solutions, aligning with Nigeria’s climate goals and sustainable energy access objectives.”
Also, he acknowledged the crucial role of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria in coordinating the review process.
He said, “The technical expertise of the Nigeria National Committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission ensures that the standards developed are robust, comprehensive, and aligned with international best practices.
“Our leadership is poised to continue in its drive geared towards energy efficiency, energy development, and energy usability in all its ramifications for the country and its citizenry.
“The outcomes of this meeting and the committee’s subsequent recommendations are expected to significantly contribute to Nigeria’s energy efficiency goals and broader environmental and economic objectives.”
