Burkina Faso’s leader, Trade, with the Nigerian delegation
Diplomatic Efforts Secure Release of NAF Personnel Detained in Burkina Faso
Following high-level diplomatic talks, Burkina Faso has released 11 Nigerian Air Force pilots and crew members after a nine-day detention.
The incident, which risked escalating into a broader diplomatic dispute, was resolved after a Nigerian delegation met with Burkinabè authorities in Ouagadougou.
The delegation, led by Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and including defense officials, engaged in discussions focused on de-escalation and regional cooperation.
The detention occurred after a Nigerian Air Force transport aircraft made an emergency landing in Burkina Faso due to a reported technical issue, which Burkinabè authorities initially deemed a violation of sovereignty.
Minister Tuggar acknowledged procedural lapses regarding airspace clearance during the emergency landing and expressed Nigeria’s regret over the incident, while reaffirming respect for Burkina Faso’s sovereignty.
He also formally distanced the Nigerian government from unauthorized political statements criticizing Burkina Faso’s handling of the situation.
The resolution comes amid heightened regional tensions, following the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from ECOWAS to form their own alliance. Analysts note that the swift diplomatic engagement prevented the detention from worsening bilateral relations, highlighting the two nations’ ongoing security cooperation despite the complex political landscape in the Sahel region.
