Death Toll Hits 46 in Sudan Military Plane Crash, 10 Injured

Officials reported on Wednesday that the death toll from a Sudanese military plane crash in Omdurman has risen to at least 46, with 10 others injured. The Khartoum Media Office confirmed the casualties, while the health ministry initially reported 19 fatalities.
The Antonov aircraft crashed on Tuesday during takeoff from the Wadi Sayidna air base north of Omdurman, a sister city to the capital, Khartoum. The crash also damaged several houses in Omdurman’s Karrari district, according to the media office.
The military stated that both armed forces personnel and civilians were killed but did not provide specific figures or disclose the cause of the crash. Some victims’ bodies were transferred to Nau hospital in Omdurman, the health ministry said.
Sudan has been engulfed in civil war since 2023, when tensions between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) escalated into open conflict. The war has devastated urban areas and been marked by atrocities, including mass rape and ethnically motivated killings, which the United Nations and international rights groups have condemned as war crimes and crimes against humanity, particularly in Darfur.
In recent months, the conflict has intensified, with the military gaining ground against the RSF in Khartoum and other regions. The RSF, which controls much of Darfur, claimed to have shot down a military aircraft in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur province, on Monday.
