Datti Baba-Ahmed declares 2027 Presidential bid on Labour Party platform after Obi's exit

ABUJA – In a decisive move, Datti Baba-Ahmed, the former vice-presidential candidate to Peter Obi in the 2023 election, announced his intention to contest the 2027 presidency under the Labour Party (LP).

His declaration follows Peter Obi’s recent departure from the LP to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Addressing supporters at the LP national headquarters in Abuja, Baba-Ahmed affirmed his commitment to the party. He stated he holds no resentment towards Obi for leaving, acknowledging the LP as the platform that secured them millions of votes in the last election.

“I am my own boss,” Baba-Ahmed asserted. “I contested the presidency in 2019 before partnering with Obi in 2023 for national unity. When the time comes, I will make my decision known. I am a Nigerian, a Hausa man, and a Muslim. I have what it takes to lead.”

Earlier, LP Chairman Julius Abure expressed confidence that the party would remain strong despite Obi’s exit.

While grateful for Obi’s contributions, Abure emphasized that the party’s success was a collective effort.

He revealed that Governor Alex Otti of Abia State had joined the LP before Obi and had no plans to defect.

Abure also shared that on the night Obi left, Baba-Ahmed immediately called to reaffirm his loyalty to the party, even proposing a unity gathering.

“The Labour Party is intact,” Abure stated. “We will remain together to provide a genuine alternative for Nigerians and will not let the people down.”

Dele Fashomi is now the Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Newstide247.com newspaper online, which he started in July 2015. He is also into biography writing, with many books in his trail, some of which he wrote alone and one he co- authored with his mentor, Mr Dare Babarinsa, entitled: Olabiyi Durojaiye – DARE TO BE DiFFERENT. He also guided and collaborated with Pa Olatunji Odusanya in writing his autobiography – AGAINST ALL ODDS. There are many other books in the works under his pen.
