Court stops PDP’s 2025 convention, orders party to follow its own rules

A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order stopping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from proceeding with its planned National Convention in 2025.

The ruling mandates that the party must first comply with its own constitution, the Nigerian Constitution, and the Electoral Act.

The judgment was delivered on Friday by Justice James Omotosho in response to a lawsuit filed by three disgruntled PDP members.

The judge also barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing the results of any PDP convention that is not conducted in line with the law and the party’s official guidelines.

Justice Omotosho stated that INEC is legally obligated to disregard any party convention that fails to adhere to these statutory requirements.

The plaintiffs had taken legal action to stop the convention, which was scheduled for November 15-16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

They argued that the process for electing new National Officers was in breach of the PDP’s constitution.

The listed defendants in the case include the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the PDP itself, several of its national officers, and its key governing committees.
