Court Sentences Osinachi’s Husband to Death by Hanging for Culpable Homicide

Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi, to death by hanging.
The court found him guilty of culpable homicide in the death of his wife on April 8, 2022.
The judge ruled that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to Nwachukwu’s conviction.
He was arraigned on June 3, 2022, by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (OAGF) on a 23-count charge, including culpable homicide punishable by death, domestic violence, child cruelty, and criminal intimidation.
During the trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses, including two of Osinachi’s children, and submitted 25 exhibits. The defense called five witnesses, including Nwachukwu, and presented four exhibits.
Before sentencing, Nwachukwu’s lawyer, Reginald Nwali, pleaded for leniency, while the prosecution counsel, Mrs. Aderonke Imala, urged the court to enforce the law strictly.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging on the homicide charge. He also received prison terms ranging from six months to three years on other counts, including spousal battery and child cruelty, as well as fines totaling N700,000.
Osinachi, known for hit songs like Ekwueme, died at 42, sparking nationwide outrage and demands for justice. The ruling brings closure to a case that drew significant public attention.
