Coup: AU backs ECOWAS, suspends Niger Republic
The African Union has wielded the big stick, suspending Niger Republic over the coup leaders action of truncating democracy in their country on July 26.
In a statement on Tuesday, the AU called on coup leaders to release the elected President Mohamed Bazoum and return to their barracks.
The AU Peace and Security Council said it has taken note of the decision of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, to activate a standby force for a possible military intervention.
The organisation said has directed the AU Commission to assess the economic, social, and security implications of deploying such a force.
The ECOWAS said it is prepared to send troops into Niger Republic if diplomatic efforts to restore democracy fail.
The AU called on all of its member states and the international community to refrain from any action that could legitimise Niger’s junta.
