China backs Nigeria, warns U.S. against “interference” after Trump’s military threat

China has issued a firm warning against external interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs, a direct response to recent threats from former U.S. President Donald Trump about potential military action over alleged killings of Christians in the country.

Reaffirming the close strategic and economic partnership between Beijing and Abuja, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that China “firmly supports” the Nigerian government in leading its people on a development path suited to its national conditions.

Speaking to journalists, Ning emphasized China’s position of respecting national sovereignty and opposed any nation using religion or human rights as a pretext to interfere in another country’s domestic affairs.

This stance follows controversial remarks made by former President Trump, who suggested the U.S. could deploy ground troops or launch airstrikes in Nigeria to halt the violence.

While returning to Washington on Sunday, Trump told reporters, “Could be,” when asked about military options, adding, “We’re not going to allow that to happen.”

This is not the first time Trump has targeted Nigeria on this issue. He had previously placed the country on a “Special Watch List” for alleged religious freedom violations, warning that continued violence could lead to suspended U.S. aid and potential military intervention. China’s latest comments position it in direct opposition to this approach, championing national sovereignty over external pressure.
