Canadian court upholds order denying bail to Nigerian

The Court of Appeal for Ontario has upheld a lower court’s decision to deny bail to Adeyanju Olaniran, rejecting his N155 million bail bond.

Olaniran, alongside Timothy Balogun and Rachel O’Connor, is sought for extradition by the United States to face charges in the State of Arkansas.

The trio is accused of orchestrating a complex fraud to intercept shipments of medical supplies from distributors and client pharmacies.

The alleged scheme involved using couriers to acquire the shipments unlawfully, reselling the supplies for profit, and laundering the proceeds through digital transfers to bank accounts they controlled.

Justice J. Mirza of the Ontario Superior Court, who initially ordered their detention, stated he was satisfied that the evidence—both circumstantial and direct—was sufficient for a jury to reasonably infer each respondent’s involvement. The Court of Appeal’s rejection of bail signifies a high risk of flight, ensuring they remain in custody until the extradition process is complete.
